On the afternoon of June 24, 2007, Sergeant Tan Nian, first class sergeant of guard Squadron, Shunde Border Defense Inspection Station of Guangdong Frontier Defense Corps, saved four teenagers who fell into the river during a visit to his hometown in Pubei, Guangxi. He died bravely and wrote a heroic song of praise for border guards who loved people and were not afraid of sacrifice. After comrade Tan Nian's death, leaders at all levels paid close attention to him and gave his approval. Local media reported and publicized him extensively.
